Basic Workflow

Here’s a summary of the basic steps to edit and deploy the Control Pad for your Captivate projects:

Create a folder for your project ( typically \My Documents\My Adobe Captivate Projects\MyProject ) and copy the Control Pad folder into it.

Publish your Captivate movies as Flash (.SWF) files into the \flash folder.

Edit flash filename within the Control Pad HTML file to display your published Captivate (.SWF) movie.

Edit the HTML and CSS for your project requirements.

Test the Control Pad on your local PC in your web browser.
Stage the files to production (copy files to web server).

Backup the Original Files

We strongly suggest keeping a copy of the original Control Pad package as a backup. In other words, keep a copy of the original control_pad.zip file somewhere safe. If you ever face a situation when you have issues with an edited version of the Control Pad, you can always reference the original files to fix the situation.

For Each Project Use a Copy the Control Pad Folder

Our suggestion is for each Captivate movie using the Control Pad, make a copy of the Control Pad folder. You can change the name from “Control Pad” to a custom folder title without affecting any of the Control Pad functions.

We refer to each copy of the Control Pad for a unique Captivate movie the “Project Folder”.

Within the Project Folder, you then simply change the published Captivate movie within the /flash folder, and the reference to the Flash filename within the HTML file.

Create a “Template”

Once you’ve customized the Control Pad for a particular project, you can easily reuse the customization for additional projects. Simply copy the entire Project Folder, rename the folder and then switch out the published Captivate movie within the /flash folder. This will avoid you having to make the same edits again and again for each project and ensure your projects provide a consistent interface for end-users.
